Since January 2026 the US State Department rejects photos with AI-edited facial features. This tool never retouches your face, skin, or eyes. For US, UK, Canadian, Indian, South Korean, New Zealand and Australian documents the default is crop and resize only, with the photo left unaltered; replacing the background is an opt-in, and the result then fails its edit check. The result checks the file against travel.state.gov — file size and format for a passport photo renewed online, and pixels, file size and format for a visa photo. Head size, expression and lighting are not checked.

The portrait-matting model (~5 MB) starts downloading once you pick a document that allows background edits, and is cached on your device — a small status chip shows the progress. Crop-only documents (US, UK, Canada, India, Japan and others) fetch it only if you choose to replace the background. After that, photos process in a few seconds on most phones.
Camera access requires HTTPS and explicit browser permission. If you blocked it earlier, look for the camera icon in your address bar and re-enable. As a fallback, tap "or select a photo" to use any photo from your gallery — the rest of the flow is the same.
White (default for most passports), off-white, light gray (UK and several EU), and light blue (some employee badges). For documents that allow edits, the original background is replaced with the solid color you pick after the AI cutout. Documents whose rules forbid edited photos keep the background you shot.
