Since January 2026 the US State Department rejects photos with AI-edited facial features. This tool never retouches your face, skin, or eyes. For US, UK, Canadian, Indian, South Korean, New Zealand and Australian documents the default is crop and resize only, with the photo left unaltered; replacing the background is an opt-in, and the result then fails its edit check. The result checks the file against travel.state.gov — file size and format for a passport photo renewed online, and pixels, file size and format for a visa photo. Head size, expression and lighting are not checked.

The portrait-matting model (~5 MB) starts downloading once you pick a document that allows background edits, and is cached on your device — a small status chip shows the progress. Crop-only documents (US, UK, Canada, India, Japan and others) fetch it only if you choose to replace the background. After that, photos process in a few seconds on most phones.
